Tunnel Bluffs Overview. There are a ton of view hikes in this areaall levels from easy to difficult with different scare factors. Cold snap froze all the water on the trail so it was not muddy but icy. Its perfectly marked and I forgot my boots to went up in my Reeboks with absolutely no thread and it was totally fine. At 11.5 km round trip, it was longer than any hike Kavya had done in a day, but the elevation gain was moderate at around 500 m. It was perfect. The viewpoint is spectacular, and if you're pressed for time, the viewpoint at the point that the trail goes from hard to easy (1.66 km in) is nearly as good. The trail is extremely well marked and quite easy to follow so getting lost is not an issue on this one. Smoke Bluffs 4. The true Tunnel Bluffs hike, as I took it today, is a wide-track logging-style road (with lots of loose rocks) almost the entire way, and generally less secluded, picturesque, and technical than the Tunnel Point trail was with a few major pay-off ocean views along the way, shafts of sunlight coming through dense tree cathedrals when the weather's fine, and a couple of nice log bridges over mountain creeks. Right across the street from a small parking lot, you'll find the start of the hike. The Spit (Estuary Chelem Trail) 12. Getting to the start of the Tunnel Bluffs hike will require a car. If this is the route you take, it'll be around a 40-minute drive to the Sunset Trailhead. Two very obvious entrances off the highway join shortly after. It is also illegal to park on the shoulder and to walk along the side of the highway. Just around 10 parking stalls. You got some wonderful photos! You'll want to add this as a stopover along your Big Sur road trip.. It's a short and easy 1-mile route hike that splits to two different endpoints but both provide epic views of the ocean and cliffside.
